November 1941
----------------------------------------------------------
SISTERS Ella and Florence Graham returned Sunday, October 5, after an extended visit in Miami with Robert Graham. Accompanying them were Mr. and Mrs. Victor Phillips and Robert Graham, who returned to Miami the same day. All were pleased to see Sisters Ella and Florence looking so well.
Mrs. Max Arendt, Miss Meta Monsees and Mrs. Lillian Rugg were guests of the Unity at dinner Sunday, October 5.
Monday, October 6, Estero was swept by a "baby" hurricane. Fortunately the storm was not of major proportions, so the damage was comparatively light.
L. W. Bubbett arrived Friday, October 17, from Miami for a few days' visit in Estero.
On Saturday, October 18, the 102nd Anniversary of the birth of KOKESH was fittingly observed by the loyal band of staunch followers and numerous, friends gathered for the day who have so faithfully carried on throughout the years. It was a most happy occasion, the day a perfect one, with. joy and harmony prevailing. The Unity grounds never showed to better advantage, and the kitchen department prepared a delicious dinner for this day of days. During the dinner hour congratulatory messages were read from Koreshans from all points of the compass who were with us in spirit at this Solar Festival. These messages evidenced ,a binding tie between those at the center and those at the circumference who perform their work of support and whose aid is gratefully appreciated.
The guests for the day were: Mrs. Hilda Lamb and Miss Margaret Penn, Lakeland; Max and Genevieve Arendt, Mrs. Julia Home, Miss Meta Monsees, Miss Lydia Pierce, Mrs. Hedwig Michel, Mr. Strickland, Mrs. George Briggs, Misses Dawn Castle and Virginia Aldenhoff and Mr. and Mrs. Percy Jones, Fort Myers; Mrs. Jennie Campbell, Mrs. Edith Trebell, Mrs. Lillian Rugg, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Trebell, Mr. George Muller and Ben Johnston, Estero; and Mr. Osborne, Bonita Beach.
In the evening ice cream and cakes were served, after which Commemoration Services were held as usual in the Art Hall, at 7:30. The Hall was artistically decorated with masses of shrubs leading up to a large likeness of the Master draped with the Koreshan flag. The readings of the Master's Orations were impressive and gave hope for the fulfilment of long cherished desires. Throughout there was a pervading feeling of peace and spirituality to be found only on such occasions. The program follows:

1. Violin Solo, "Romanza" Jacobsohn - Laurence W. Bubbett
2. Song, "The Resurrection" - Koresh Congregation
3. Invocation - Koresh - Read by Brother Henry Silverfriend
4. Euphonium Solo, "The Rosary" - Nevins - Walter Bentz
5. Oration - Koresh - Read by Sister Etta Silverfriend
6. Violin Solo, "Adoration" - Borowski - Laurence W. Bubbett
7. Oration - Koresh - Read by Brother Henry Silverfriend
8. Song, "The Messenger" - E. M. Castle - Congregation
9. Prayer - Koresh - Read by Sister Etta Silverfriend - Response by the Congregation
10. Song - "Lift Up Your Heads, 0 Ye Gates" - Congregation
11. Recessional, Euphonium Solo, "Flower Song" Lange - Walter Bentz - Mrs. Edith Trebell at the Piano
[Owing to the unexpected visit of L. W. Bubbett from Miami, a last minute change was made in the program which had already been printed to .permit of his assistance in the evening Services.—Ed.]
We were pleased to have our old friends Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lewis and Mr. and Mrs. Fred McConnell visit us Sunday, October 19.

Continuation of "The History of the Koreshan Unity"
From The American Eagle, by A. H. Andrews
Meanwhile the Fort Myers paper was publishing all manner of dero'gatory yarns about the Unity and its membership. An indignation meeting was held at Estero in which it was sug; gested that inasmuch as the Community had at hand a large and well equipped printing plant, the strategic move would be to .publish a weekly paper to combat these false reports. Right then out of a political crisis The American Eagle was born.
A political convention was held with all nondemocrats par ticipating and an independent county ticket placed in the field for the general election. The Unity brass band and speakers campaigned in nearly every settlement in the county. Political resentment among county seat politicians continued to seethe beneath the surface and some of them were on the lookout for an opportunity to make trouble. On October 13, 190'6, one of them encountered a member of the Unity on the street and tried to pick a quarrel with him over an insignificant matter. A crowd soon gathered and Dr. Teed, who came along at the moment, stepped in in an attempt to settle the controversy and was rewarded for his peacemaking efforts by being struck on the head a staggering blow by the town marshal. In the ensuing general election several of the independent candidates ran neck andneck with the regular democratic nominees.
From the injury sustained by Dr. Teed in Fort Myers there later developed a severe case of neuritis in the left arm, accompanied by excrutiating pain. Various specialists were con sulted, but with little relief, and on December 22, 1908, he passed away at the age of 69 years. A vault was hastily con structed on the lower end of Estero Island and the body in terred therein. A heavy storm some years later wrecked the tomb and carried away all vestiges of the body.
