COMMUNITY CURRENT EVENTS
January 1942
------------------------------

ON NOVEMBER FIRST a change was made in the personnel of the post office. Sister Marie Fischer was added to the staff in order to relieve Sister Rose Gilbert who has served in the capacity of postmistress so long and faithfully. However, we are not depriving the public entirely of Sister Rose's cheerful service as she is still on parttime duty like the good soldier that she is.
Miss Evelyn Luettich has been engaged to assist Brother Arthur Moore in the store, thus giving him a much needed change of occupation for several hours each day. During the summer Brother Arthur constructed a stone retaining wall along the river bank for some distance west of the bridge. Recently he cleared and terraced the grounds at this same point and now has it planted to crotons and other shrubbery. He has also filled in with muck the site of the old store and already has a good stand of grass. In the center of this plot he has constructed a cement fish pool.
The store and filling station have been given a coat of fresh paint and now present a very pleasing appearance.
On December 7 we had as dinner guests Mr. and Mrs. Fred McConnell and Mrs. Lovelle Ahrano, of Tampa, and Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Lewis of Everglades. Mr. Henry Moreland of Fort Myers was a supper guest on Sunday, December 7.
Sister Rose Gilbert went to Evergaldes, on December 7, for a week's visit with her sister, Mrs. F. S. Lewis.
Brother Lester Wintersgill with the help of Richard Dumbleton has finished moving the bees from the old location across the river to a new one just a little southeast of the printing house. At first the bees didn't seem to appreciate his efforts in their behalf, but they are now getting down to business and producing a good flow of honey which our folks enjoy very much. Just now the cajeput trees are in bloom, affording the bees very good feeding "grounds."
The Dombeya, more commonly known as the Christmas Rose, is in full bloom, and as there are a number of these shrubs scattered about the Unity grounds, the bees are having a veritable feast. They seem to be particularly fond of this. rose, and no wonder, for it is not only a beautiful sight, but also very fragrant, and if the honey produced from its nectar equals the fragrance, we shall have a very superior grade of honey this season.
The apiary grounds are set to cajeput trees and with another year's growth and consequent bloom the bees will not have to leave home to gather their honey.
The building of a number of small rowboats goes on apace, Brother Lester very efficiently heading this
department of activity. He plans to build a larger one in which he will install a motor with enough horsepower to tow the smaller boats to the bay where splendid fishing may be had.
On December 14, we were pleased to have as dinner guest Mr. Robert Graham and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Graham and small niece of Miami, Florida.
Mrs. Lillian Rugg took dinner with us on Sunday, December 22.
Brothers George Hunt and Lou H. Staton have done a very good job of clearing the grounds surrounding the old "Tea Garden."
Brother George Hunt is also doing some grubbing and clearing on some of o'ur outlying property—familiarly known as "Marie's Pond." This is partly muck soil and the plan is to drain and fence it and get it under cultivation so as to have a good garden spot for vegetables, etc., in the near future.
While strolling around the grounds recently we came upon a small garden plot planted to carrots, turnips, etc., which Brother Daniel McNamara put in several months back. Brother Daniel has been indisposed for some time, however, so Sister Alwina took over the job of keeping the garden watered, but carrying water to thirsty vegetation during the dry season is pretty much of a job, so Brother Lou. H. Staton took over and has once more utilized the bamboo, which grows so luxuriantly here, to construct an ingenious watering system, so now all he has to do is turn the faucet and presto the job of watering is done.
We also discovered several winter bearing avocado trees in this sheltered spot with a fair crop of fruit— or is it a vegetable? We have never settled this question to our own satisfaction. However, fruit or vegetable, they will be very welcome when they appear on the table in one of Sister Charlotte's delectable salads. This variety, Lulu by name, of Guatamalan origin, is not much for looks, having a rusty, rough skin, but coming, as they do, so much later than our other varieties, will be enjoyed just as much as the better looking ones.
The Trailer Camp is now almost completed and ready for the trailerfolk who we hope will be attracted not only by the natural beauty of the grounds, but also by the improvements we have made and conveniences installed to add to their comfort and wellbeing.
Mrs. Hedwig Michel has come from Fort Myers to make her home with us for the present. We hope she will like us well enough to make it a permanent arrangement.
Now that the Christmas rush is over we shall tear off the last leaf on the calendar and wish you a "very prosperous and happy New Year.
