Community Current Events - June 1932 by Max Arendt

ONE OF THE largest political rallies ever staged at Estero was held on Wednesday, April 27, at the Estero school grounds. A barbecue supper was served to the crowd in attendance, which numbered about five hundred. Practically every prom- inent candidate for office in Lee County was present and gave a short talk. The political activities were followed, by an entertainment presented in the school auditorium. The Unity membership took a large part in the affair and seemed to enjoy the proceedings im- mensely. Brother Henry Silverfriend acted as Chair- man of the speaking program. Recent heavy rains have put an end to the destruc- tive woods fires that threatened life and property for the past several months. As the result of one of these fires a bridge on the Tamiami Trail south of Estero was completely destroyed, making the construction of a new one necessary. A second political rally, similar to the one at Estero, was held on May 7, at Bonita Springs, about eight miles south of Estero, and was attended by many of the Unity members. At this time, Lee County is a hotbed of political activity and will continue to be so until June 28, when the final elections will be held. The work of replacing old poles carrying the elec- tric power lines of the Unity plant with new ones is under way. A group of brothers was engaged cutting- down the timber and preparing it for use, and will assist in erecting the new poles. Sister Barbara Ehrisman, w^ose duty among other things is to assist in the mailing of THE FLAM- ING SWORD, The Am-erican Eagle, and our Koreshan literature, enjoyed a vacation of two weeks in Miami, staying with Sister Ella Graham, who was also on a visit there with her sons, Robert and Lloyd. Sister Ada and Dr. J. R. Price motored to St. Petersburg and Tampa with Paul Sargent, visiting Koreshan friends en route. Brother John Watson was a recent Sunday guest of the Benson family at Bonita Beach. Robert Graham, accompanied by his mother, Sister Ella Graham, who had been visiting him, and Miss .Dorothy Baldwin, his cousin, arrived from Miami. Sisiter Barbara also returned with them. Robert and Miss Baldwin returned home the next day. We are glad to report the return to the Unity of Mrs. Emily Bessemer who had been residing at Wash- ington, D. C., for some time. 'Sister Emily was a former resident of the Unity. Harry DuBois who has been in charge of the fill- ing station, left for the North on a vacation of several months. Richard Dumbleton and Benjamin Rayfield with the assistance of Brother George Hunt, will ope- rate the station during his absence. A .picnic supper that will live long and pleasantly in the memories of those who attended it, was enjoyed by a group of about seventy members and guests on Sunday, May 14. The picnic was held at the beautiful bamboo landing in the Unity park, which proved to be an ideal setting for such an affair. The menu con- sisted of turkey sandwiches, fruit salad, and fruit pre- serves, coffee and cake. The picnic was given by Mrs. Jennie Campbell and daughter, Edith Trebell, and'a warm vote of thanks was given them for their kindness in making the affair possible. A vote of thanks was also expressed for those who assisted with the prepara- tions. Guests who attended were Miss Lydia Pierce, Dr. Myrtle Seller, Miss Clara Angell, Miss C^enevieve Bisbing, Miss Meta Monsees, and Mr. P. B. Bisbing, all of Fort Myers. Paul Sargent has painted another portrait of Dr. J. R. Price, and needless to say, it is excellently done. Mrs. A. Camphausen, Miss Elin Lindberg, and Miss Bertha Boomer motored to beautiful Sanibel Is- land, which, can be reached only by ferry from Pimta Rassa. Sanibel Island is known far and wide for its tropical beauty, fine beaches, and rare shells. Sister Tacy Weaver enjoyed a visit of several days with Mr. P. B. Bisbing and daughter, Genevieve, and Miss Meta Monsees, at Fort Myers. Miss Lydie Pierce of Fort Myers, Paul Sargent, and the writer recently motored to the Bok Tower at Mountain Lake, and to Lakeland, visiting with our good friends, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Lamb, Mrs. Alex McKay, and her sister, Miss Margaret Penn, all of whom reside at Lakeland. The party returned the same day. Brother Henry Silverfriend accompanied Mr. Joseph Meyer, of Detroit, on a trip to Tampa and was gone several days. Brothers Alfred Christensen, Stephen Chislett, Will Fischer, and William Shearer drove to Alva for a visit with Henry Moreland, who is now busily en- gaged in harvesting and marketing a fine crop of cante- loupes which he was able to grow successfully on his farm. Mr. Paul Sargent, who had been visiting at the Unity for several weeks, left for his home at Charles- ton, Illinois. He was accompanied as far as Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, by Sister Cora Stephens and her daughter, Alafae, who will visit relatives there. Before his departure, Mr. Sargent exhibited some of the paintings which he had partly or completely finished during his visit, much to the enjoyment of those who appreciate the high quality of his work. Needless to say, we will miss Mr. Sargent's presence and hope for a visit soon again. Sister Emily Bessemer has taken over Sister Cora Stephens' duties in the kitchen during Sister Cora's absence.
