{"id":3337,"date":"2025-08-18T09:12:02","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T14:12:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/koreshan.mwweb.org\/?p=3337"},"modified":"2025-08-18T09:12:02","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T14:12:02","slug":"koreshans-and-african-american-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/koreshan.mwweb.org\/?p=3337","title":{"rendered":"Koreshans and African American History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is not February, which is Black History Month, but an article in the August 17, 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-press.com\/story\/life\/2025\/08\/17\/archives-nelson-tillis-fort-myers-first-african-american-settler\/85441897007\/\" target=\"_blank\">News-Press<\/a>, <sup>((<a href=\"#footnote_1_3337\" id=\"awef_ident_1_3337\" class=\"footnote-link footnote-identifier-link\" title=\"A subscription to the News-Press may be reqired\">1<\/a>))<\/sup> repeated from a February 20, 2016 article about the family of Nelson Tillis, purported to be the first African American to settle in Fort Myers.<\/p>\n<p>The article reminded us that although the information is very sketchy, there were African American members of the Koreshan Unity as well.  So, like the News-Press, we want to link you to an article published here in February 2016 as well.
