DARK TREES TO THE WIND: A Cycle of New York State Years; Chapter 14--The Great Alchemist at Utica by Carl Carmer--KSHS-BK-51; William Sloane Associates, New York Publishers: Koreshan Carl Luettich, an old white-haired German, was lamplighter and night watchman over the grave of Cyrus Teed.--Page 281

MEMORIES, MEMORIES--DAYS OF LONG AGO chronicled by Marie McCready with participation by Lovelle McCready: Karl Leuttich and his son Charlie who were fisherman lived on Estero Island--page 73

Notes from Evelyn Horne: Carl Luettich
Born in Barth, Germany, he and eight-year-old son, Charlie joined the Koreshan Unity group in California, from their home in San Diego. They came to the Koreshan Unity home in Chicago in 1893. Moved to Estero, Florida, February 1894.

Carl was a carpenter by trade. At the Unity he became a fisherman for the family, catching large boats of fish, oysters, and clams in the Estero Bay, providing fresh sea food for the big family of 250 people. Carl, sank the boat, "The Ada," with a load of 3,000 clams. This was a story never to be forgotten by Koreshan Brothers.

Carl and son Charlie lived at Carlos Point, owned by the Koreshan Unity. This was a summer vacation spot by the Koreshan sisters and children. An ideal place to go for an outing or a few weeks at the sea-shore. Brother Carl has the place in charge and keeps it very attractive looking. Carl Luettich with other Brothers kept watch over Dr. Teed's tomb in 1908, after the Master's death at Estero Island. Carl ran the mail boat from Estero to Punta Gorda, making three trips per week.

Charlie grew up in the Unity, attending the Koreshan School. His teachers were Emma Norton and Sister Jennie Campbell and Eleanor Castle. Carl Luettich was with the scientific survey at Naples Beach in 1897. Carl met with his death August 25, 1923, while sifening(sic) gas from a boat for a cook stove. He died at the Koreshan Unity home, and was buried on the bank of the Estero River Cemetery (Horseshoe Bend).

Son, Charlie, at the age of 29 married a local Estero girl, Dora Fernandez. They bought property from the Koreshan Unity and lived west of the Unity home on the Estero River. They later moved to Mound Key in a 40 foot house boat where three of the children, Henrietta, Mary, and Evelyn were born. The girls went to school on Mound Key. Charlie and Dora moved to Estero in 1925 where son Charlie, Jr. was born--also Arthur in 1928.

Carl Luettich was of medium build, about 5 foot--10 inches, reddish brown hair and mustache, blue eyes, weight about 165 pounds. Carl wore grey-blue work clothes, always a straw hat for his fair complexion, to protect from the sun.

ESTERO POST OFFICE; Established March 26, 1895: Carl Luettich was the first "boat" mail carrier. From 1920-1923, he carried the mail three days a week to Punta Rassa, Black Island, and San Carlos Point. Later, Allen Andrews, the Koreshan News-printer, carried the mail by boat. The boats were named "The Victoria" and "The Cracker Bay." They were owned by the Koreshan Unity.

Mound Key/Notes from Evelyn Horne:
Charles Luettich family and 3 daughters moved from Mound Key in 1925 for the girls to go to school at Estero, and for their son Charles Luettich, Jr. to be born. They lived in Mary Mill's house, 2 story on Corkscrew Rd, a Koreshan lady who was Teed's secretary. The two sisters Henrietta and Mary went to the Damkohler School on Mound Key and have gold medals from Damkohler for their
achievements. The family lived in a 40-foot house boat on the south side of the island. John Furen, owner of land, dug shell out of the island for the county roads in Estero. The first teacher was Minnie Lee Wombell, who lived with the fishermen's families.
